On 10 November 1483, Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Saxony, to Hans and Margarethe Luder. He was baptised the very next morning at the local Church of St. Peter and Paul, named after St. Martin of Tours—a beginning that would later prove prophetic for a man who would reshape the Christian world.
The Luther family relocated to Mansfeld, where Hans prospered in the copper mining industry.

On the eve of All Saints' Day, Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses to the Castle Church door.
On October 31, 1517, Luther reportedly posted his Ninety-five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, protesting the sale of indulgences by the Dominican friar Johann Tetzel. Spread rapidly via the printing press, this single act of academic protest accelerated into a continent-wide reformation movement.
Luther publicly burned Pope Leo X's excommunication threat at the Elster Gate.
Luther publicly burned the papal bull Exsurge Domine after Pope Leo X ordered him to recant 41 of his teachings or face excommunication. Leading students to the Elster Gate on the very deadline for his recantation, this act of defiance solidified his break from the papacy.
Facing Emperor Charles V, Luther refused to recant—and was declared an outlaw.
Formally excommunicated by Pope Leo X and summoned before Emperor Charles V, Luther famously refused to recant on April 18, 1521. The Edict of Worms declared him a heretic and outlaw. His protector, Elector Frederick the Wise, staged a kidnapping to spirit him to safety.
In hiding as "Knight George," Luther translated the New Testament into German in 11 weeks.
Hidden at Wartburg Castle under the alias "Knight George" by Frederick the Wise, Luther undertook the monumental task of translating the New Testament from Greek into German. Completed in just eleven weeks, the "September Testament" of 1522 would transform both religion and the German language.
A former monk married a former nun—redefining Protestant family life forever.
He married Katharina von Bora, a former Cistercian nun, on June 13, 1525. Despite the scandal of a monk marrying a nun, their union at the Black Cloister in Wittenberg became the model for the Protestant parsonage, a rejection of mandatory celibacy, and the foundation of a loving household that produced six children.
Luther sided with the princes against the peasant uprising, a controversial turning point.
During the Peasants' War, Luther wrote the harsh tract "Against the Robbing and Murdering Hordes of Peasants," upholding the authority of princes. This controversial stance shifted the Reformation's alliance firmly away from social revolution and toward established state authority.
The full German Bible was published—bypassing Latin to reach the common people.
Luther published his complete German Bible—both Old and New Testaments plus the Apocrypha—working alongside the Collegium Biblicum, including Philipp Melanchthon. Published by Hans Lufft with elaborate woodcuts, the "Lutherbibel" put Scripture into the hands of ordinary people and effectively standardised modern German.
Luther died in his birthplace and was buried beneath the pulpit of Wittenberg's Castle Church.
Returning to Eisleben—the city of his birth—to mediate a dispute, Luther's health failed. He died on February 18, 1546, at the age of 62. His body was carried back to Wittenberg in a solemn procession and interred beneath the Castle Church pulpit—the very place where the Reformation began.
